It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?

My name is Dawan Hopson aka Kentucky Boy. I’ve been in the music industry for over 20 years as an artist and an executive. I got my start when I met the world famous Rap group The Nappy Roots and became their opening act on an 100 city national tour. While on the road, I got a chance to learn the music business inside out and I built many connections through networking. I traveled the world on tour from 2004 to 2012. I currently run Kentucky Boy Entertainment LLC, which is a music marketing and promotions company based out of Kentucky. My mission is to help develop, manage, and market independent artists by bridging the gap to a successful career.

I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?

I remember when I first started out as an artist, I learned quickly that this was a cut-throat industry. There were times that I was scammed and times when I just wanted to give up rapping altogether. But the most important thing that I learned was that the industry wasn’t as glamorous as I imagined it to be. I had to work extremely hard to earn my seat at the table. I remember being on the road with Nappy Roots and they made me drive their tour bus for them city to city. But it taught me how to be a road manager. They also made me sell their merchandise at every show/concert. But that taught me another stream of income. I remember also having to be their security, hype man on stage, and fulfill any other role that they needed me to do. But that’s what made me who I am today. Nothing comes for FREE! And the struggle at that time was real. There were nights I slept on the hotel floor, and nights we all had to take a pay cut due to promoters cheating us out of our pay. But I learned that persistence is key and passion makes you a fighting survivor. And before you know it you’ll always come out on top.

Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?

I specialize in growth and development of independent music artists. I help take their careers to the next level. I am able to do this because I have actually walked the walk and talked the talk. I have been where most artists are trying to go. For instance, I’ve signed a major deal. I have been a successful independent artist, and most importantly I’ve built a brand in this industry that has blessed me to take care of my family. So I’ve lived the dream. Plus I am the best at what I do.

What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?

I would tell them to never give up! And if you want to be successful then work hard for it. Get around people who you want to be like. Surround yourself with people who inspire you. Get you a mentor, agent, or manager if that will help. Learn your craft and develop your skills to the best of your abilities. Invest and believe in yourself. And most importantly have faith that GOD will fulfill your purpose in life.

Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?

Success to me means feeling secure and having peace mentally, physically, financially, and spiritually. When I put God first everything else falls into the proper place.

What’s next for you?

There’s an artist that I am managing who I am currently working to get his next record to platinum status. His first single went gold. But I consider myself an entrepreneur so I’m always thinking and creating new ways to make multiple streams of income.

Finally, how can people connect with you if they want to learn more?
