Bio:
Beginning her entertainment career as a Grouchkateer on PBS’ Sesame Street, Okema started very early. Not just an actress, she began singing professionally at the age of 12 and writing songs at age 14. Okema toured with the Black Expo for two years opening for R&B groups INTRO, SWV and singer Joe and has worked with such production legends as Eli Tubo of Erick B. & Rakim and Carvin Haggins (Touch of Jazz, Jill Scott, and MusiqSoulChild); recording with and opening for MusiqSoulChild in Philadelphia.
Okema has evolved as an artist and songwriter, working with legends like Full Force and Ron Grant and training with the likes of Craig Derry and Making the Band’s Ankh Rah. She also realized that her acting skills definitely lend themselves to her music. As a result, Okema has fused her passion for music and movies with her up-coming solo project, “Scene & Heard;” a soulful and refreshing collection of R&B with pop, reggae and jazz influences.
Excited about what’s next, Okema looks forward to releasing “Scene & Heard” in the first quarter of 2011 independently. The pending EP will showcase not just her vocal range, but her ability to provide a refreshingly different vibe, at time where much of the music all sounds the same.
